The winter is over and you’ve finally stepped outside for the first time in a while. You look up and realize oh, your gutters are looking pretty full. Besides being unsightly, leaving your gutters full of debris can actually cause major issues for your home and its foundation. But what exactly is the point of a gutter? Well, they’re actually more important than you might think.

The primary purpose of a gutter is to move rainwater off of your roof and away from your home’s foundation. When there’s too much water falling around your house, it can erode the soil around it and compromise its foundation. Oh, and it can wreak total havoc on your basement, too.

How important is gutter cleaning?

As a homeowner, you likely know the importance of preventative home maintenance. And well, gutter cleaning certainly falls under that category. Though most don’t pay their gutters any attention until there’s a problem, it’s best to introduce a reliable gutter cleaning schedule to avoid any issues all together.

When your gutters are full, they can’t do their job properly when it rains. This means that water just gushes down over the gutters and collects around your house, threatening the foundation.

What to look for in a gutter cleaning company?

  • You want a company that’s going to remove all of the debris and disposes of it properly. The last thing you want is for a company to come that just blows everything out of your gutters and leaves the mess in your yard and flower beds.
  • Ask about flushing your gutter channels. This removes any roof granules.
  • Do they flush your downspouts? This is a great way to determine if everything is working properly.
  • Ask about their inspection process. You want to be able to trust that the company isn’t just cleaning your gutters but reporting any issues they notice so you can take the necessary steps to make repairs.
