Millions of people choose to remodel their homes each year. And while remodels are typically a pretty significant investment, as the housing market continues to boom, home remodeling is certainly a more cost effective choice at the moment. So if you’re planning to join in on the million others and tackle a home remodeling project, we have some tips for you.

Where to start with a home remodeling project

We’ve discussed it before, but it’s important to know that there is a difference between renovating and remodeling. A remodel generally means when you are changing the structure of something.

Know what you want

This one might seem obvious, but you would be surprised. Take the time to get specific. Bookmark inspiration photos online. Create a Pinterest board. Tear out pictures from magazines. Take note of the design elements you like in your friends’ homes. Knowing what you want is key to seeing a remodeling project through to a successful completion.

Budget

No matter which way you slice it, you have to think about dollars and cents. It’s important to understand where you stand with the budget in order to properly plan a realistic project. It’s also important to add a little extra into the budget to account for the unforeseeable.

Prioritize

When dreaming up the perfect remodel, it’s recommended that you prioritize certain key elements. As plans become a reality, you may learn that things are either more expensive or a bigger undertaking than you expected. This is where your priority list will help you out. You’ll know what is a must have and what isn’t.

Consider the flow

Consider the traffic pattern of your home – or your desired traffic pattern. What about furniture placement? How do you intend to use the space? How would a future owner of the home use it? These are important questions to ask yourself before you get started.

DIY or no?

We know it’s tempting to tackle the big things yourself. There are blogs and videos galore showing you how to execute your dreams on a dime. And while there are certainly some projects you can absolutely tackle on your own, there are others better left to the professionals. Not sure if this is a project for you or the professionals? We break it down for you. And just in case you’re already knee deep into a DIY project that was better left to the pros, here’s what you can do if a DIY project goes wrong.
